The adult education department is Instituto largest single service center, serving 1,200 individuals annually in ESL, GED, and Spanish literacy.  It works in partnership with the Illinois Community College Board, the State Board of Education, the Chicago Public Library, and the Illinois Secretary of State Literacy Office. Classes are held daily at Instituto’s Main Facility, the Back of the Yards Career Center, and the St. Michaels Educational Center.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
The ESL program at Instituto provides quality instruction and language practice to 750 students each year. There are five levels of instruction from beginners to high intermediate.

GED in Spanish
Instituto has preparation classes for the GED in Spanish. These are intensive 16-week preparation classes. Students learn strategies on how to pass the GED. They receive help filling out their GED application and register to take the exam.

Spanish Literacy Program
Spanish literacy services are offered to people who never attended school or did not complete a 6th grade education. Volunteer tutors assist students in language, math and social sciences. We serve 400 students a year.

Family Support Services
These services help parents learn how to be their children’s best teachers, while improving their own English and learning computer skills. Their children attend pre-K classes, early literacy, or home work tutoring, to strengthen the educational level and well being of the whole family.
