Youth Education
Chartered in 1996 and housed at Instituto, the Rudy Lozano Leadership Academy (RLLA) provides a curriculum inspired by the principles of social justice and student-centered learning in order to meet the educational and developmental needs of its students.  RLLA is part of the Youth Connection Charter Schools system and one of 31 members of the Alternative Schools Network.

RLLA’s mission is to contribute to the fullest development of students through education which fosters growth as critical, active and productive members of their families and communities.   RLLA operates under the guiding principal that students cannot learn in the classroom when their survival and social needs are not met.

RLLA’s curriculum differs from traditional school system by:

  • Empowering students to be decision-makers in their own lives
  • Providing opportunity to become active participants and leaders in their community by employing principles of unity and social justice
  • Teaching students to respectfully question our society at all policy levels
  • Encouraging students to model and speak what they believe through community and school based projects
  • Creating and incorporating content related to student’s lives

As an integrated component of Instituto’s programs, students gain a first hand understanding of the meaning of community.  The student body is comprised of 80 students between the ages of 16-21, predominantly from Latina/o neighborhoods, including Pilsen, Little Village, Back of the Yards, and throughout Chicago's Southwest side.
